Construction of Forbidden City

forbidden citySince the 5th year of Yongle Emperor, Ming Dynasty, the emperor gathered nationwide craftsmen, and convened 200,000 -300,000 civilian workers and military workers to build the Forbidden City. The large-scale palace complex was completed in 14 years. In Qing Dynasty, the Forbidden City was only partly rebuilt or revised, with the overall layout being unchanged.
In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, China’s construction technologies saw? a great improvement. The design and implementation were in high standardization and canalization, which not only sped up the engineering progress, but also facilitate the construction and the management of expenditures.
forbidden cityIn Qing Dynasty, the construction of palaces was jointly managed by Ministry of Internal Order and Engineering Department. Ministry of Internal Order unit Construction Bureau was responsible for the renovation of the Forbidden City. In Ming and Qing Dynasties, the production of tiles and colored glaze exceeded that in former dynasties in both quantity and quality. The palaces generally used glazed tiles, and some important palaces are paved with gold-cover bricks. And the buildings’ decorations were extremely luxurious.
