In the following 480 years, the Forbidden City has been under continuous re-construction and extension. Now the palace covers an area of 720,000 square meters, with a total of 8700 rooms. Located in the heart of Beijing, it is the largest and most complete existing palace in China and the whole world. It is ranked No.1 of the Top 5 Palaces in the world. In 1987, UNESCO ranked the Forbidden City into World Cultural Heritage list.
